Welcome to the website for the Sierra Expeditionary Learning School Initiative, an initiative to open an independent charter school under the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District.

This initiative was founded by a group of thirteen local families who came together over a year ago to begin looking at education alternatives for our community. We were inspired after seeing the Expeditionary Learning model being used at the Grass Valley Charter School and wanted to bring the same opportunity to the students of our district. We have been working in collaboration with Tahoe Truckee Unified School District (TTUSD) since September 2009 to address the needs of the district, the founding parents, and the Tahoe/Truckee community as a whole.

Sierra Expeditionary Learning School (SELS) aims to operate in partnership with TTUSD as an independent charter school:

• SELS hopes to begin operation in the fall of 2010.
• SELS would initially serve 63 students in grades K-5.
• SELS would expand over 4 years to serve 132 students in grades K-8.
• SELS will adopt a curriculum based on Expeditionary Learning.

The founding group of SELS is committed to having a student population that is truly reflective of the Tahoe-Truckee community. We are passionate about providing a safe and culturally competent learning environment that is accessible to all families.
