The Final Stretch

Expedition Express:  Our work is done and the crew is ready to share their learning with the community at our Celebration of Learning on Thursday, June 7th, from 6:00 – 7:30. Bring your family and freinds to visit our classrooms and be amazed at all the wonderful learning that happens everyday at SELS.

Celebration of Learning:  Our crew has been working hard at completeing their Science Project boards and they are anxious to share their knowledge of different types of energy, sound, light, and heat.  They will also share their Science Lab notebooks as well as a story written from the perspective of a water drop changing through the 3 states of matter (solid, liquid, and gas).

Culminating Fieldwork:  Last week our crew embarked on an overnight fieldwork adventure that took us to Iberdrola Renewables, a wind farm located south of Dixon, CA.  The crew was able to learn how turbines work, how large and powerful each turbine is individually, and go inside an actual wind turbine.  We also bridged our fall expedition as well by visiting the Western Railway Museum and learning about Trolley Cars that run on tracks.  After a campout at Lake Natomas in Folsom, the crew toured Pioneer Village in Historic Folsom.  Each child sat on a caboose, saw an 1850’s railroad turntable, walked through a pioneer cabin, watch a working blacksmith, and went gold panning.  Whew!  What a busy two days.

Wizard’s Lab:  Wednesday, June 6th, our crew participated in a fabulous event hosted by the KidZone Museum in conjunction with the Lawrence Hall of Science at Tahoe-Truckee Airport.  Students were able to particpate in numerous hands-on experiments and activities that reinforced our Energy Matters expedition.

Crew News:

Swimming:  Our final swimming lesson will be on Monday, June 11.  Remind your child to wear their bathing suit to school under their school clothes.  Thanks to all the parents that have volunteered to help in the locker rooms with our “lil fish.”  We couldn’t do these activities without you.

Nevada County Library:  The final walk down Donner Pass Road will be Wednesday, June 13.  Please check your bookshelves for any public library books and send them to school.  We will be returning all books and I will send home the student library cards on Wednesday.  Remember to take your child to the library throughout the summer months to keep their reading skills sharp.  The library has a summer reading program with prizes.

SELS News:

Celebration of Learning:  Thursday, June 7th from 6:00 – 7:30 is our schoolwide Celebration of Learning.  The PTC is hosting a BBQ starting at 5:30 and the Welch Crew is responsible for bringing salads.  We are looking forward to a wonderful evening with your amazing children.

Book Drive:  SELS is collecting books this week to distribute to students throughout the summer for reading.  Take a moment to look through your bookshelves at home and clean-out your gently used books.  We are looking for reading levels K-7, so any age appropriate book is welcome.

Final Thoughts:

What an amazing year this has been for the Welch Crew.  Your children inspire me each and every day which is a testament to the wonderful job you do at home.  Thanks for sharing your precious children with me, they truly are gifts.

With gratitude,

Diane
